Asbestos-free lining for cluthes or drum- or disc brakes in passenger or goods vehicles contg. a metal wool, an organic polymeric binder and usual friction- or slide aids, is improved in that it contains 8-15 wt.% of an organic polymeric binder, 0-10 wt.% of a friction- or slide aid, 5-65 wt.% of a metal (pref. steel) wool, 10-75 wt.% of an oxide and/or sulphide of a nonferrous heavy metal, and 2-70 wt.% of carbon. The heavy-duty linings have high thermal stability and wear resistance. The coefft. of friction is in the medium range. This material does not attack the opposite material in clutches or brakes.
