Cylindrical filter sleeve on support - consisting of synthetic resin coated plastic foam spheres bonded together

Filter medium consists of a packing or spherical particles made from plastic foam. These are coated with synthetic resin and bonded together by means of resin to form a rigid filter body. The individual particles can be made from polystyrene foam. To these can be added at least 8% quartz particles uniformly distributed and bonded with resin. Epoxy type resins are suitable for this duty. It can be used with a filler powder which has the same density as the resin. The filler can be constructed in the usual way with layers of differing particle size. Esp. for use in obtaining water from deep wells. Normally the filler is suspended by the pipe down the well and therefore its weight is of considerable importance. If plastic pipe is to be used, the wt. of the filter is limited because of the low tensile strength of the material. The use of plastic foam cores in the filter element allows a significant reduction in total wt. The relative amount of quartz allows the bulk density to be adjusted.
