The retaining system secures a strut with a bearing eyehole at one end, to a fence post, particularly of round cross-section. A length adjustable clamping strip (3), carries one or more bearing blocks (4), pressed against the post. (2). Each block incorporates a bearing point for a hinge bolt (11). The strip may pass through a hole (8) through the bearing block. The hole may be wide enough to accommodate the clamping strip lock (a).
