1471064 Strut-type suspensions SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING & DEVELOPMENT CO BV 16 April 1974 [13 April 1973] 16675/74 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] The connection to the vehicle body of a vehicle suspension strut comprising a telescopic shock absorber and a coaxial coil spring includes a needle or roller bearing. The bearing has sheet metal races. The radially inner ends of the races are extended beyond the raceways and co-operate with each other or with an intermediate element (plastics ring 39, Fig. 3, not shown). The radially outer end of one race is formed with a flange 14 extending perpendicularly to the raceways (in crosssection) to locate the needles or rollers. Instead of an angular contact bearing with cylindrical rollers (as shown and Figs. 2, 3 and 6, not shown), the bearing may be a horizontal needle bearing (Fig. 4, not shown), or a horizontal taper roller bearing (Fig. 5, not shown). The abutment plate 8 for the coil spring may be formed as an extension of one of the races or (Figs. 3 and 6) it may be a separate member mounted on the piston rod 7 of the shock absorber and supporting one of the races either directly or via a rubber buffer. In all embodiments one or other of the races is connected via a rubber buffer 18 to the vehicle body or (Fig. 3) to the spring abutment plate. The rubber buffer may be formed with a lip which contacts the other race to seal the bearing, obviating the need for a separate seal ring 10. |
