1413879 Oxyalkylated norbornenes; silicone block copolymers; polyurethane foams UNION CARBIDE CORP 15 Jan 1973 [17 Jan 1972] 2114/73 Headings C3R and C3T [Also in Division C2] Novel norbornene derivatives of the formula wherein Y denotes H or C 1-4 alkyl, Y1 denotes H or C 1-12 alkyl, R0 denotes a divalent hydrocarcon group free of aliphatic unsaturation, a is 0 or 1, R00 denotes an alkylene group of at least two carbon atoms, b is at least 1, R000 denotes-R, -OCNHR, -OCR1 or -OCOR1, R denotes H or a monovalent hydrocarbon group free of aliphatic unsaturation and R1 denotes a monovalent hydrocarbon group free of aliphatic unsaturation, are prepared by alkoxylating compounds of the formula followed where necessary by suitable conversion of the terminal OH group, e.g. by reaction with isocyanates to provide urethane groups, or by reaction with alkali metal alkoxides and then alkyl halides to provide ether groups. In examples Y and Y1 denote H, R0 denotes methylene, a is 0 or 1, R00 denotes ethylene or a mixture of ethylene or propylene, b is variously 7À8, 48À2, 49À5 and 56, and R000 is H or methyl. The above compounds may be further reacted with hydrosilanes containing at least one unit of the formula and other units of the formula Z p SiO 4-p/2 in the presence of a platinum-containing catalyst to provide block copolymers consisting of units of the formula (wherein m denotes 0, 1 or 2, n denotes 1 or 2, m+n denotes 1, 2 or 3, and X denotes a monovalent hydrocarbon group free of aliphatic unsaturation), and units of the formula (wherein Z denotes a monovalent hydrocarbon group free of aliphatic unsaturation and p denotes 1, 2 or 3). The above block copolymers function as foam stabilizers in polyurethane foams based on polyether or polyester polyols, polyisocyanates, conventional catalysts and blowing agents. An example uses a glycerolethylene oxide/propylene oxide reaction product, tolylene diisocyanate, water, dimethylethanolamine, CCl 3 F and stannous octoate in conjunction with two alternative block copolymer foam stabilizers to produce one-shot foams.
