A consumable electrode 3 is melted in the vessel 5 under a layer of slag 9, the molten metal thus formed flowing into the mould 17. As the level of metal in the mould rises, the vessel 5 is moved upwards. The vessel 5 is provided with an overflow slot 8 for molten slag and a non-consumable liquid metal electrode 6.
