In the prodn. of starch prods., a mixt. of starch, starch flour or cellulose with gum, gum resin or resin is carboxymethylated. Pref. the mixt. is moistened to a water content of 1-15, esp. 3-8 wt. % and treated with NaOH and then ClCH2CONH2 or ClCH2COOH, keeping the temp. below 95 degrees C, esp. below 60 degrees C. The carboxymethylated mixts. esp. a carbomethylated mixt. of potato starch with guar flour, opt. mixed with additional guar flour, are also claimed as new. The prods. are claimed for used as additives for the paper and textile industries. They can be added to paper pulp or used for surface treatment or as additive for coatings in paper and carboard mfr. They can also be used in the petroleum industry. The prods. have a wide viscosity range and different characteristics from those of carboxymethylated starches or cellulose. In an example, 650 kg potato starch were stirred 15 min with 35 l distilled water, then treated with 60-120 kg carob bean flour and 65 kg NaOH flakes and kept 90 min below 60 degrees C. 80 kg or more ClCH2COOH were added and the mixt. was kept 60 min below 60 degrees C, then dried and milled. 765 kg prod. were obtd., corresp. to 87% yield.
|
