A domestic refrigerator has a compressor operated refrigerating unit whose heat exchanger has at least two series connected evaporator sections. One is for deep freeze compartment and the other one is used in the normal refrigerating temperature compartment. The power consumption of the refrigerator can be reduced if required in a simple manner if the increased ambient temperature allow this or if the stored material is to be held only for a short period at higher storage temperature of if the material is compatible with reduced refrigerating effect. The compressor is operated intermittently by a regulator in relation to the temperature in the warmer compartment. The regulator also operates a deicing heater (29). The heater circuit has a switch (27) which can be arbitrarily operated in relation to the position of the regulator (16).
