<p>A portable, self-contained strain gauge useful for checking distortion in structures, airframes etc., has two vertical (1) joined together by a horizontal bridging pin (2). The lower end of each arm carries an interchangeable knife edge of hardened material (3). The knife edge probes are held against the workpiece under test by a clamping screw (21) attached to an L-shaped bifurcated bracket (18) whose ends pivot with the bridged arms (19). The upper end of one arm carries an adjustable spindle (11) which operates a diaphragm in a chamber in the upper end of the second arm (6). This arm also has a second, compensation chamber with diaphragm (13). Both chambers are interconnected by a capillary tube filled with water. The tube U-bend is filled with mercury (10) and a calibrated scale (12) indicates changes in the loading of the test piece (17).</p> |
