An asphaltic paving compsn. consists of (by wt.) 5-95% of unfused and unclinkered continuous feed municipal incinerator residue, 0-33/4% lime, 0-90% of mineral aggregate having a max. ave. dia. of 1 1/2 inches, and 5-11% (based on the wt. of the other components) of asphalt. The residue has is not >15% loss on ignition, particle size not is not >2 in., and a ferrous content is not >5%. The compsn. may be made by removing oversize particles and ferrous material from residue to satisfy the above conditions and then blending it with asphalt and other premitted components. The cost of the compsn. is significantly reduced by replacing stone with the residue, while as little as 5 1/2% of asphalt is satisfactory with the latter, whereas 10-12% is necessary with blast furnace slag. The problem of residue disposal is mitigated.
|
