The powered vehicle is for laying granular asphalt either hot or cold. The granular material is carried in a container (1) at the vehicle front and is distributed onto the road surface by rotatable impellers (21). The thickness of material spread is governed by an initial board across the machine width. The thickness is subsequently thinned down by adjustable height boards (8, 9, 10) which are spaced progressively nearer the road. The final board (11) is pivoted to the machine rear to present a smooth trailing edge on the laid ashphalt.
