The external double shoe brake for machine applications is lever actuated over a coupling that permits free play before operation such that a certain amount of soft adjustment is possible to allow for wear. The hand operated lever (3) is pivoted (2) on a block mounted on a fixed surface (1). A projecting lug (5) carries a threaded sleeve (4) that has a centrally located bolt (6). The sleeve and bolt are set to give engagement (a) and disengagement (b) clearances relative to the surfaces of the brake actuator (11). Any wear in brake shoe linings is permitted within the range of clearances present into the actuator coupling.
