In order to treat a liquid with a fluid, the liquid is fed via a contact point with the fluid to a down duct (2) where the fluid, owing to its low density and the buoyancy resulting therefrom flows somewhat slower, as a result of which the contact time is increased. So as to avoid edge perturbations, the fluid is introduced via tubules (3) across the edge zone into the flow (11). The fluid and the liquid, after this contact has been achieved, are collected separately and brought into contact at least one more time in adjacent stages. The stages in their entirety may be traversed by the fluid and the liquid in parallel flow or in countercurrent, each individual stage being traversed in parallel flow. The invention can be used in gas admixture and aeration processes, as well as in biological submerged processes such as the production of citric acid or yeast. <IMAGE>
