In a frame supporting open-end spinning units 2, Fig. 1, packages are transferred by conveyor 3 onto rods 6 successively aligned with the advancing package tubes. The rod 6, at its package receiving position, is disposed in a vertical plane extending between two vertical planes bounding opposite sides of the conveyor. As shown, Fig. 3A, the packages may be carried from the conveyor by capstan 9 having rods 6 or guided, Fig. 4, by curved tube 18 onto spindles 6 which may be fitted with end flanges allowing each spindle and its packages to be lifted from carrier 15. As shown in Fig. 11, packages are carried from conveyor 3 by conveyor 20 pivotable clockwise by the package about pivot 24 against spring bias to the align packages with rod 6. As shown in Fig. 15, each package may be carried on an inclined rod mounted on carriage 30 movable on rails 48, 48a, the placing of a package on a rod causing carriage-mounted levers to engage with one of the hooks 46 on endless chain 47. The package may be placed on the conveyor 20 of Fig. 11. To position a package for the insertion of a carrying rod, Fig. 22A, the presence of package on holders 63 is detected photoelectrically, guide rod 90 is lowered into the package tube by the rotation of gears 94, Fig. 22B, and holders 63 are pivoted to drop the package onto rod 35. The package may be conveyed into holders 63 by the conveyor shown in Fig. 11, and the positioned package received by a vertical rod 35 mounted on a carriage 30 of the device shown in Fig. 15.
