1463187 Universal joints CYCLO INDEX CORP 11 July 1974 [16 July 1973] 30775/74 Heading F2U A universal joint, to be fitted between the ends of two shafts to be coupled thereby, comprises a cylindrical portion B having a plurality of slots, arranged in pairs, transverse to the longitudinal axis of the coupling, each pair comprising a pair of slots (e.g. 20, 24) which are spaced longitudinally to define a leaf spring (e.g. 32) between them, with alternate pairs of slots being relatively angularly spaced by 90 degrees. The embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1 has four pairs of slots, the third pair 42, 44 defining a leaf spring 46 angularly aligned with that of the first pair 22, 24, but the slot 42 of the third pair nearest the end C of the joint adjacent the first pair 22, 24 being from the opposite side of the joint from the slot 22. The same applies for the fourth pair 54, 56 when compared to the second pair 34, 36. There may be more than one such set of four pairs (Fig. 4, not shown). The coupling of a joint to a shaft is illustrated in one form in Figs. 5 and 6 in which the central joint member (as B of Fig. 1) has axial projections 130 having longitudinal slots 132 with widened ends 134, a pair of arcuate members 138 engaging the projections 130 and being screwed together by bolts 144 (the slots 132 tending to be closed as a result) to cause the arcuate members to grip the end of a shaft. The shaft has a key engaging in a keyway 116 to prevent relative rotation. Different arcuate members 138 may be substituted for use with shafts of different diameters. Alternative couplings comprise a split end of the joint which can be closed by a screw to grip the shaft (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) or a separate arcuate member which can clamp the shaft between itself and a complementary part of the joint (Fig. 2, not shown). |
