<p>1528415 Actinide separation or recovery UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY 29 March 1976 [15 May 1975] 12486/76 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] In a process for recovering actinide values from an aqueous feed solution by extraction with an organic solvent having a greater density than the aqueous feed solution and containing tributyl phosphate (TBP), followed by stripping at least some of the actinide values back into an aqueous solution, ferric ions are added to the aqueous feed solution in order to remove degradation products of TBP, for example dibutyl phosphate and monobutyl phosphate, by forming a precipitate therewith during the first stage of the process, which precipitate is withdrawn from the interface between the two phases. Extraction may be effected with a solution of TBP in carbon tetrachloride or trichlorobenzene using packed or pulsed columns or mixer-settler devices. The process may be used for the treatment of nitric acid solutions of waste material or spent nuclear fuel for the recovery of plutonium or the separation of plutonium and uranium. Plutonium may be separated from the organic phase from the first stage by stripping with an aqueous solution containing hydroxylamine nitrate, hydrazine, or ferrous sulphamate as a reducing agent.</p> |
