A fabric for making napkins is woven mainly from absorbent warp and weft yarns but has non absorbent warp yarns in an off-centre warpwise zone equal in width to the folded width of the napkin; the weave is such that the non-absorbent yarns predominate on the surface which is placed against the baby's skin. The absorbent zones are folded on to the outside and secured by stitching. The fabric has weftwise stripes of plain weave along which it is cut into napkins by pinking. Alternatively two or three layers (one of which has non-absorbent yarns on the outer surface) are joined by interweaving along warpwise and weftwise stripes along which the fabric can be cut and hemmed. The absorbent yarns are cotton or regenerated cellulose; the non-absorbent yarns are cellulose acetate or triacetate nylon, polyester, polythene, polypropylene, vinylidene cyanide, acrylonitrile, or vinyl chloride. |
