Alcohols and ketones of saturated hydrocarbons containing from 5-8 C atoms such as cyclohexane, cycle-octane, cycloheptane, hexane, octane, heptane, iso-octane, methyl and dimethyl cyclohexanes are prepared by a process comprising (a) contacting the hydrocarbons at a temp. of from 100-220‹ C. in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen, preferably at a concentration of 1-25% in admixture with nitrogen, in the presence of a boron compound such as boric acid, anhydride or an ester, (b) hydrolysing the reaction product to yield an organic and a boric acid aqueous phase, (c) crystallizing and separating boric acid from the aqueous phase thereof and recycling to the oxidation zone and (d) fractionating the organic phase to separate the alcoholic and the ketonic product; wherein the aqueous phase resulting from the hydrolysis step is subjected to a distillation of from 5-40% of its total weight before or during the crystallization of the boric acid. The distillate is preferably used to wash the organic phase resulting from the hydrolysis and then recycled to the hydrolysis zone. |
