In a Peltier effect device comprising at least two thermoelectric elements at least one of the elements has thermoelectric properties which differ along the length thereof between the hot junction and the cold junction, the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient being greater adjacent the hot junction than adjacent the cold junction. The element may be composed of a series of discrete segments of material having different thermoelectric properties or alternatively the properties may vary in a continuous gradient. A plurality of the devices may be arranged in cascade. The Specification lists a large number of thermoelectric materials and dopants therefor from which the material(s) of the elements may be selected. |
