An apparatus for continuously producing strips of fasteners, e.g. nails, comprises a nail assembling and agitating device (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), which aligns the nails 5 into a row and feeds them between upper rails 15, 17 of a first rail track (7) whereupon they fall to a lower end 9 of the track (7) where they are heated by an electric inductive device (11), the heat output of which is controlled by a thermistor. A magnet (69), Fig. 3 (not shown), attracts the nails 5, one by one, between a second rail track 23 where a reciprocating bar (71), Fig. 7 (not shown), pushes them between first toothed segments of horizontally spring biased ratchet bars 35, 37 and fixed ratchet bars 47, 49 so that every time toothed horizontally spring biased driving jaws 51, 53 reciprocate in the direction of nail travel under the action of a sliding member 59, the ratchet bars 35, 37 move off the bars 47, 49 to allow stepwise conveyance of the nails 5. Paper strips 81, 83 (or one only) which are first coated with a thermoplastic adhesive and then a foamed filling agent, are (or is) fed between horizontally reciprocating pressure and cooling plates (121), (123), Fig. 13 (not shown), where they are pressed against the shanks of the hot nails 5 so forming a strip of nails with the foamed filling agent at least partly filling gaps between adjacent nails, the cooling operation so hardening the adhesive and filling agent. The strip is then perforated between adjacent nails by a vertical row of needles (127), cooled again by an air blower and finally fed to a cutting device where the strip is cut into predetermined lengths, the cutter being activated after a counter (183) has counted a required number of conveying movements. A photoelectric device (10) in the first rail track (7) stops the feed device (1) should the nails build up in the track (7). In a modification, Figs. 15-18 (not shown), the teeth of the fixed ratchet bars are replaced by spring biased balls disposed within the mouth of horizontally extending bores while the other ratchet bars are fixed to driving jaws which reciprocate in a circular manner. In a second modification, Fig. 19 (not shown), the driving jaws are replaced by the links of one, or two chains disposed above each other, to carry the nails stepwise against at least one guide rail. The reciproating bar (71) is replaced by an indexable toothed disc. In a final modification, Figs. 20, 21 (not shown), the driving jaws are pivoted towards and away from the nails, and reciprocate in the direction of nail travel whilst the ratchet bars are not spring biased but also pivoted to or from the fixed ratchet bars. |
