The sidewalls of a radial ply tyre are reinforced by plies 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, the cords of which are elastic and are arranged at opposite inclinations with respect to radial cords 3, each ply having one end 7, 7<SP>1</SP> located above a bead wire 4 and within the space formed between the turn-up of the radial cords and the radial cords and the other end 8, 8<SP>1</SP> at about the mid-height M-M of the tyre where it is separated from the radial cords by an elastomeric layer 9. The latter layer may extend from bead to bead. The cords of plies 6, 6<SP>1</SP> have a modulus of elasticity below 50 x 10<SP>8</SP> dyne/mm<SP>2</SP>, and may be made of steel, rayon, polyester or polyamide. The tread may be reinforced with plies 2. |
