The steering column 5 of a motor vehicle includes laterally - projecting fan - shaped brackets 7, 8 which extend parallel to the dish profile of the steering wheel 6 and carry switch units 9, 10 having switches 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 operable by the driver's finger tips while his thumbs and palms remain in contact with the steering wheel rim 19. Each switch unit 9, 10 includes a rotary switch 11, 15 and a plurality of tumbler type, pull type or push type switches, and forms an assembly which is plugged into the bracket 7, 8 using a multipin plug arrangement. The individual switches are separated on the units 9, 10 by fixed ribs 21 and have grooves or flutes 22 on the actuating surfaces. The switch 11 controls operation of the direction indicators, the switch 12 headlamp flashing and main beam, the switch 13 windscreen wipers and washers, the switch 14 adjustable interval operation of the windscreen wipers, the switch 15 horn operation, the switch 16 parking lamps, the switch 17 headlamp dipping, and the switch 18 dashboard lighting. An instrument assembly 20 arranged between the brackets 7, 8 carries instruments including a speedometer, fuel gauge and temperature gauge. |
