In a carpet sweeper including coupling means between a sweeper supporting wheel and a rotary brush for driving the latter only when the sweeper is moved over the carpet in one direction, the coupling means comprises a wheel 15 having on its inner periphery cams 23 functioning as ratchet teeth in co-operation with a pawl 31 secured to an end of the brush, the wheel 15 being engaged and driven by a sweeper supporting wheel 21, Fig. 4 (not shown). The described sweeper has two brushes each driven via two coupling wheels 15 arranged so that in each direction of movement of the sweeper one brush is driven by its coupling wheels 15 whilst the other rotates freely in engagement with the carpet. |
