A cleansing composiion which is stable in both dilute and concentrated aqueous solution and in said solution has a pH higher than 10, contains at least one halogenite of sodium or potassium and at least one surface-active agent which is a saturated aliphatic compound or an arylaliphatic compound having a saturated aliphatic moiety, condensed with an oxyethylene chain comprising at least 8 ethoxy groups and having a terminal hydroxyl group which is esterified with a non-oxidizable organic or mineral acid, e.g. phosphoric or sulphuric acid.
