An integral housing, disposable filter cartridge comprises a cover 22, housing 21, which may be glass, and a paper filter element 50 pleated in two directions (Fig. 4, not shown) and separating inlet space 68 from outlet space 70, grommets 38a, 38b extending through cover 22 and sealingly engaging in corresponding recesses in base plate 10 when the cartridge is clamped to plate 10 by spring clip 24. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates a plate 10 to which two cartridges may be clamped, conduits within the plate connecting them in series or parallel. The cartridge may have an additional grommet (38c) opening into space 68 for drainage purposes. At least grommet 38b may be initially formed with an internal closure (Fig. 5, not shown) which is penetrated by a punch 76 on plate 10 only when the cartridge is pressed into place. Fig. 3 shows a single filter element 50, sealed by adhesive to housing 21 and cover 22 and having alternate pleats of different depths (Fig. 4, not shown). Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a cartridge with two pleated filter elements, of equal porosity but different pleat depths, connected in series. In manufacture the filter element is compressed when inserted in the housing, and the adhesive is heat cured to bond housing, element and cover together.</p> |
