A non-woven glass fibre reinforcement for a resinous material comprises a layer of randomly disposed bundles of short glass fibres parallel with one another, and fibres interlacing with the layer in spaced zones sufficiently close together to unite the bundles and form a coherent and flexible body with sufficient porosity to allow the resin to penetrate throughout and bond to the fibres. Peforations may provide access for the resinous material. The glass fibres may be of different lengths and diameters woven into strands with different number of fibres. A preferred length is between 2.5 and 60 cm. Perforations are pref. spaced at distances 1/8 to 1/4 of the cut fibre lengths. layer of continuous parallel glass filaments may be placed on one or both surfaces of the structure. An adhesive-free reinforcing fibre structure is formed which may have a density up to 4.24 kg/m2 in one layer and is suitable for boat hulls.
|
