<p>1417444 Preparation of hydrogen SULZER BROS Ltd 1 March 1973 [2 March 1972] 9946/73 Heading C1A Hydrogen having a natural deuterium concentration is produced by supplying steam 3 having a natural deuterium concentration and a hydrocarbon feedstock 4 to a thermal hydrogen production plant A and recovering the hydrogen 12; excess water (of increased deuterium concentration) is recycled via isotope exchange column 15 to increase the concentration of deuterium in at least a portion of the steam supplied. The invention also comprises the corresponding apparatus. The plant A comprises a primary reformer 1 which contains a catalyst, e.g. Ni oxides surrounded by a combustion chamber 2 receiving fuel and air. Steam from fresh water at approximately 600‹ C. is supplied to reformer 1 through line 3 and hydrocarbons at approximately 300‹ C. are supplied to reformer 1 through line 4. The mixture, at approximately 700‹ C., passes to secondary reformer 5 via line 6 and is catalytically oxidized over nickel oxides with the aid of air from line 7 to H 2 and CO. The gas mixture at approximately 1100‹ C. is cooled in heat exchanger 9 and enters converter 10 which has an upper catalyst in the form of Cr oxides and lower catalyst in the form of Cu and Sn oxides. CO and H 2 O react exothermically to give H 2 and CO 2 and converter 10 has a cooling jacket 11. The mixture leaves the H 2 production plant via line 12 after excess water has been removed in condenser 13. The H 2 in this mixture has a deuterium concentration approximating to a natural concentration.</p> |
