PURPOSE:To produce iron oxide powder with a low impurity content and fine particle diameter, by blowing an oxidizing gas on the surface of molten iron or bubbling the gas from the side below the surface thereof to oxidize and evaporate the molten iron and cooling and solidifying the molten iron. CONSTITUTION:An oxidizing gas is blown on the surface of molten iron or bubbled from the side below the surface thereof. The molten iron is evaporated from a part near the surface of the molten iron in a disturbed state. In this case, the temperature of the molten iron is increased by oxidizing reaction, etc., thereby to further promote the evaporating action. The above-mentioned evaporation will occur, of course, even when the oxidizing gas is bubbled from the side below the surface of the molten iron. The iron oxide powder thus produced (molten state) is cooled and solidified during evaporation and/or through steps after the evaporation to give the aimed iron oxide powder. Since the raw material is not passed through a conventional acid washing process, the aimed high-purity iron oxide powder having fine particle diameter can be obtained. Thereby more efficient and lower cost of a roasting step can be attained in producing oxide magnetic materials, e.g. ferrite, etc.
