PURPOSE:To acquire a flat light source device suitable for the back lighting of a permeable type picture device, which maintains the even plain lighting by a small power, and which can have either a compact size or a large size, by furnishing a sealing member to seal a luminous gas by a discharge and a visual spectrum device attached to the inner surface of the sealing member. CONSTITUTION:By sealing a gas in a package 1 and applying a voltage between two electrodes to raise the inner temperature, a metal such as mercury is evaporated, a charge is generated, and a luminous spectrum is radiated responding to the type of the metal. At the inner surface of the package 1, a phosphor is spread as a visual spectrum device to absorb the luminous package and radiate a visual light. As the phosphor 13, MgAl11O19 or LaPO4 added with Ce and Tb, Y2O3 added with Eu, a mixture of those substances at a desired ratio, or the like is used. As the package 1, acrylic resin, a glass, or the like is used, and the glass is preferable in paticular in respect of preventing the deterioration of the package inner surface and the generation of impure gases.
