A voltage converter for a semiconductor memory circuit, comprises an oscillator 1; a sub-circuit including a buffer 2, charge-pumping circuit 3 and power section 4; a main circuit including a buffer 2', charge-pumping circuit 3' and a power section 4'; and an output voltage detector 5. In a stand-by mode, only the sub-circuit operates. When detector 5 detects a drop in voltage VOUT due to increased load demand, the main circuit is also brought into parallel operation. The circuit aims to reduce overall power consumption and provide a more stable power supply. A plurality of main circuits may be provided in parallel. <IMAGE>
