PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method and device of a running roll cross type rolling mill capable of reducing a running cost for a supplying means of hydraulic pressure and securing a service life of a contact seal in a hydrostatic support pocket. SOLUTION: In a running roll cross type rolling mill, having a hydrostatic bearing 8 as a plane bearing for crossing at a liner interposed between upper and lower backup rolls 3 and a housing 1 and managing plate-shaped control by crossing the upper and lower backup rolls 3 while a plate material is rolled, a hydraulic pressure is supplied to a hydrostatic support pocket N at the hydrostatic bearing 8 when required mainly at the time of the running roll crossing to support a rolling load in a floating state, and the hydraulic pressure is drawn from the hydrostatic support pocket N to support the rolling load in a bottom- out state at the rest of times.
