<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide Apo-2 ligand variant polypeptides. <P>SOLUTION: The invention relates to the Apo-2 ligand variants including one or a plurality of amino acid substitutions in the native sequence of the Apo-2 ligand. The Apo-2 ligand variant may include substitution with cysteine, lysine and serine. An isolated nucleic acid containing a nucleotide sequence encoding the Apo-2 ligand variant, a vector comprising such nucleic acid and a host cell including the vector are provided.
