A sewing machine is provided to prevent an end of an upper thread cut by an upper thread-cutting unit from being used in stitching cloth when a sewing work is started. An upper moving unit(36) reciprocates an upper thread operation blade(40) between an upper thread catch position, where an upper thread is caught below a sewing needle(9), and an upper thread cut position, which is distanced from the upper thread catch position at a predetermined interval. An upper thread-keeping unit(31) keeps a cut end of the upper thread extended to a hole(9a) of the sewing needle. An upper thread direction-controlling unit(33) is installed at the upper moving unit and the upper thread-keeping unit. The upper thread direction-controlling unit controls a tensile direction of the upper thread extended from the hole of the sewing needle to the upper thread-keeping unit. The tensile direction of the upper thread is changed such that the tensile direction of the upper thread is different from a sewing direction when a sewing work is started.
