Configuring virtual media access control addresses for virtual machines

A network management apparatus according to an example may configure virtual Media Access Control (MAC) addresses for virtual machines (VMs). A virtual MAC addresses may include a Uniqueness identifier (ID), a DC ID, a Device ID and a Host ID. A number of bytes of the virtual MAC address may be equal to a number of bytes of an actual MAC address of the VM. VMs accessing the same access layer device in the same data center may have the same Uniqueness ID, DC ID, and Device ID and have different Host IDs. VMs accessing different access layer devices and in the same data center may have the same Uniqueness ID and DC ID and have different Device IDs.

1. A method for configuring Virtual Machine (VM) addresses for a Very Large Layer 2 (VLL2) network including a plurality of data centers (DCs) having a plurality of access layer devices, the method comprising:
configuring, by a network management apparatus including a processor, a virtual Media Access Control (MAC) address for each Virtual Machine (VM) of a plurality of VMs in the plurality of DCs according to a virtual MAC encoding rule; wherein the virtual MAC encoding rule specifies that each of the virtual MAC addresses comprises a Uniqueness identifier (ID), a DC ID, a Device ID and a Host ID, and that a number of bytes of the virtual MAC address is equal to a number of bytes of an actual MAC address of each VM; wherein the virtual MAC addresses of all VMs, of the plurality of VMs, accessing a same access layer device of the plurality of access layer devices and in a same DC have a same Uniqueness ID, a same DC ID, a same Device ID and different Host IDs, and the virtual MAC addresses of all VMs, of the plurality of VMs, accessing different access layer devices of the plurality of access layer devices and in a same DC have a same Uniqueness ID, a same DC ID and different Device IDs.
