PURPOSE: To ensure a high speed cutting by spreading a sheet material to be cut on a hard support surface, moving a cutter along a cutting line, and applying the material with a repeated crushing action with ultrasonic vibration to form a cut surface into a long shape. CONSTITUTION: A cutter 12 equipped with a cutter 1 is suspended on a support surface 14 by X and Y direction moving members 26, 28 and capable of movement along a two-dimensional cutting line, and also numerically controlled by a control part 18. The cutter has a cutting surface facing the support surface 14, which cutting surface is engaged with a sheet material S, and crushwise cut the sheet S by applying repeated vibration thereto at an ultrasonic vibration frequency along an orthogonal axisθto the support surface 14, in the direction to be in contact with or separated from the support surface 14. Generation of ultrasonic vibration is made by converting an altanater electric signal into a mechanical vibration by a converting unit comprising a converter 42 and a step-up transformer 44. Since the cut surface is of long shape parallel with the support surface 14, a high speed cutting can be made.
