A furnace for the heat treatment of ceramic or ferrous articles having vertical rows 7 and 8, of nozzles disposed in parts of two opposing furnace walls, said parts not directly facing each other, Fig. 2 (not shown), through which gases from a hot gas generator 2 are forced by a recirculating fan 5, is characterized in that burners 11 or 12 are interspersed with the nozzles of each vertical row. The arrangement permits the generation of the furnace atmosphere in the form of a vortex having a vertical axis. The hot gas generator or burner 2, which is fed with fuel by a conduit 3 tapped off a supply line 13 to " impeller " burners 11 and 12, heats furnace gas drawn from the furnace outlet and recycled by the fan. A humidifier 21 may be embodied downstream of the burner to avoid surface cracking of the ceramic goods or articles being treated. Provision of a valvecontrolled conduit 17 communicating the gas circuit with atmosphere and dampers 16 and 15 in the fan suction duct 4 and furnace outlet 14 respectively, enable cooling of the heated articles after the burners and hot gas generator have been shut down. A further valve-controlled conduit 19 connects the downstream side of the fan to atmosphere via the furnace chimney to allow excess gases formed by combustion products to be discharged.</p> |
