PURPOSE:To facilitate the manufacture and to use the phase difference plate as various optical elements by constituting it of a film consisting of a transparency substrate, an oriented film formed on the substrate, and a liquid crystal high polymer which is formed on the oriented film, subjected to nematic orientation in a liquid crystal state, and becomes a glass state at a liquid crystal transition point or below. CONSTITUTION:The phase difference plate is constituted of a film consisting of a transparency substrate, an oriented film formed on the substrate, and a liquid crystal high polymer which is formed on the oriented film, subjected to nematic orientation in a liquid crystal state, and becomes a glass state at a temperature of a liquid crystal transition point or below. In this regard, as for the liquid crystal high polymer to be used, it is indispensable to have a satisfactory orientation property by an interfacial effect, and also, to have a glass phase in a lower temperature part than a nematic phase. In such a way, this phase difference plate is suitable for an optical element for a liquid crystal display, as well, and especially, suitable for a color compensation phase difference plate for obviating the coloring of an STN liquid crystal display, a black-and-white display of a high quality can be executed, and also, the manufacturing cost is low and the productivity becomes high. |
