[Also in Division G1] A detection apparatus incorporating a detector 2 which produces a signal whose amplitude is a function of the energy associated with an event such as the arrival of a charged particle, provides two outputs, one whose level corresponds to the amplitude of the detector signal, the other being in the form of a short pulse occurring at the time of commencement of the detector signal, so that the time of occurrence of this may be accurately displayed. The apparatus incorporates a negative feedback power amplifier whose output represents the signal amplitude and thus the particle energy. The amplifier has a first cathode follower type stage 5 having a cathode load impedance 8 across which a fast amplifier 1 is connected. This amplifier responds to the initial surge of current through the impedance 8 which occurs when an input signal is received before the feedback is established in the amplifier, to provide a sharp output pulse coinciding in time with the time of commencement of the input. The impedance 8 may be a short-circuited delay line, an inductor and resistor in parallel, or a transformer.</p> |
