[Also in Divisions B3 and B5] In a process of joining sheets 2, 3, a thermoplastic joining strip 1 having, in cross-section, adjacent surfaces 101, 102 which form substantially a right-angle therebetween, is positioned so that the surface 101 contacts the rim 201 of the sheet 2 and a lateral portion 104 carrying the surface 102 is heated and deformed to contact the rim 301 of the sheet 3 so that the strip embraces the rims 201, 301. The strip 1 is slightly notched at 103 so as to facilitate the positioning of the sheet 2. The portion 104 is pressed on to the rims 201, 301 by shoes sliding on this portion while turning about an axis or by rollers. Heat is either supplied by resistance or induction heating or by the friction of the shoes or rollers against the portion 104. In one embodiment, Figs. 4-8 (all not shown), for use when the rims (201), (301) are circular, the apparatus comprises at least one roller (4) rotatable about an axis (401) disposed in a plane containing the axis (105) of the rims (201), (301) and which is also rotatable about an axis (402) perpendicular to this plane. The roller (4) is held in position by ball and roller bearings (404), (405), respectively. In use, the sheets (2), (3), the strip (1) and the rotating roller (4) are rotated about the axis (105) and the roller (4) is swung about the axis (402). In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), a grooved roller (41) rotates about its shaft (411) and swings about a shaft (412), an arm (413) connecting the two shafts. The rims (201), (301) and the strip (1) are held in position by a freely rotatable grooved roller (51). In a further modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), a grooved roller (42) rotates about a shaft (421) and swings about a shaft (422) and is formed with a ridge (427) to engage the strip (1). The elements to be joined are supported against a fixed member (62) having a ridge (627) and maintained at a suitable temperature by an electric circuit (628). In modifications of the joint construction, the strip (1) may comprise a rib (111) to form ribs (211), (311) on the sheets, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), at least one of the sheets may be formed with openings (212) to correspond with protuberances (112) on the strip (1), Figs. 13 and 14 (not shown), the sheet (2) may have a turned or beaded edge (213) to be received in a groove (113) in the strip (1), Fig. 15 (not shown), or the sheet (2) may be provided with a beaded edge (214) which fits into a groove (114) in the strip (1) and the sheet (3) may be provided with a rib (314) which forms a beaded edge (315) after the pressing operation, Figs. 16 and 17 (not shown). The invention is applicable to applying closures to portable containers made of metals, alloys, plastics, material, cardboard or paper.
