Opt substd. alpha-methylstyrene, is added to a mixture comprising (a) a hydrocarbon which is inert to alkali metals and in which poly-alpha-methylstyrene is insoluble or only sparingly soluble; (b) finely divided alkali metal(s) at 5% w.r.t. wt. of monomer; (c) a phosphoric acid amide O=P(NR2)3 or a mixture with an ether R'(OCH2CH2)nOR" (where R, R' and R" are 1-8C alkyl or aryl, n is 0-20) and/or a 5- or 6-membered cyclic eter or opt. a polynucleus aromatic hydrocarbon, at 0.1-40 wt.% w.r.t. (a). The monomer then polymerised according to the parent patent. The phosphoric acid amide: 0-20, pref. 1-20 vol.% w.r.t. (c). Control of the volume ratio as claimed enables the acid amide to the replaced by cheaper cpds. without impairment of polymerisation speed or polymer yield.
