1,169,247. Seals. TRW Inc. 9 Feb., 1967 [7 March, 1966], No. 6334/67. Heading F2B. A seal for a ball joint comprises a resilient member 20, Fig. 2, provided with one or more axial grooves 31 in the interior which extend to an area adjacent to, but not interrupting, a flexible lip 32 for the relief of grease, the flexible lip being held against the ball joint housing at spaced positions by a scalloped retaining ring 21, Fig. 1, which, as shown, fits at its upper end into a groove 24 in the member 20 and is clamped at its lower end in an arm 10 by a bolt 28. The upper end of the member 20 is reinforced with an embedded ring 35. The relief areas where the flexible lip 32 acts as a valve is confined to the scalloped areas of the ring 21. The axial grooves 31 terminate in an annular groove 31a adjacent the flexible edge 32 so that alignment of the grooves 31 with the scalloped areas is not necessary. |
