Substrates such as regenerated cellulose, plastics, paper, cardboard and metals may be coated with organic solvent solutions of copolymers of vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride and an alkyl itaconate. Coating may be effected by immersion or roller coating. The itaconate may be mono- or di-methyl, ethyl, isopropyl or t.butyl itaconate, and the copolymers may also contain units of unsaturated acids, anhydrides, nitriles and esters. Specified solvents are ketones, esters, ethers and aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone and toluene. The compositions may also contain hydrogenated castor oil, fatty acid amide, carnauba and paraffin waxes and colloidal silica. Examples describe the coating of regenerated cellulose film with copolymers of vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride and (15 and 18) dimethyl itaconate and acrylonitrile, (16) dimethyl itaconate, (17) dimethyl itaconate and acrylic acid, (22) di-t-butyl itaconate and methacrylic acid, (23) diethyl itaconate and itaconic acid and (24) mono isopropyl itaconate and maleic anhydride; the coating of anchored polypropylene film with a first coating of a copolymer of (19 and 20) vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, dimethyl itaconate and acrylonitrile, followed by a second coating of a high vinylidene chloride copolymer; the coating of polyamide film with a copolymer of (21) vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, dimethyl itaconate and acrylonitrile; and the coating of aluminium with a copolymer of (25) vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride and dimethyl itaconate. |
