[Also in Division F2] A gear ratio servocontrol associated with an internal combustion engine is operated by a membrane 12 of a container 11 connected to a valve device 7 which includes a plate 6 normally biased to a position transverse of a carburetter-engine conduit 4. In this position of the plate, a toothed rod 18, 19, due to arms 22, 25 is disengaged from a toothed segment 17 and a valve 15 is biased, by a spring 16, to close an auxiliary conduit 5. If the engine is running at high speed and the throttle valve 3 is suddenly closed the reduction in pressure in the conduit 4 causes the membrane 12 to contract and the gear ratio to decrease. Air admitted through a valve 14 and mixed with petrol from the carburetter in its idling position is sufficient to keep the plate 6 out of its transverse position but, as the engine slows, the flow through the conduit 4 is reduced and the plate 6 moves to its transverse position. The container 11 is thus connected to atmosphere via a passage 9, the membrane 12 expands and the gear ratio increases until there is no output drive when the engine is idling. When it is desired to use the engine as a brake, the rod 19, which may be operated by the foot brake pedal during the first portion of its travel, is moved downwardly and the valve 15 admits air to the conduit 4 from the conduit 5. This flow causes clockwise rotation of the plate 6 so that the gear ratio is increased to a value higher than would otherwise be the case. When the engine is running at low speed, impoverishment of the mixture is avoided by the valve 15 being allowed to close, the movement of the plate 6 towards its transverse position causing disengagement of the teeth 17, 18. The servocontrol may be disconnected from the automatic control and actuated directly by an operator.
