An apparatus for cutting substantially spherical pieces of potato comprises one or more rotatable cutting members 9, Fig. 6, extending along an arc, the end rollers 12 and 13 of which are embedded in a movable part 4 of a housing, which part is pivotable about vertical shaft 5, Fig. 4, and together with a stationary part 1 is clamped by fastening device 2 to table 3. Parts 1 and 4 enclose a substantially cylindrical cavity 8 which can be closed at its base by platform 22 pivoting about a shaft (23), Fig. 2, not shown, in part 4. When a handle 18, which is attached to rack 15 and protrudes through a slot 17 in plate 16 of part 1, is in position 18<1>, Fig. 1, the platform 22 can support a cylindrical piece of potato. As handle 18 is moved vertically down slot 17 the rack meshes with pinions 14 on small rollers 13 and the cutting members describe a spherical surface as they rotate through 360 degrees. When handle 18 is moved into position 18<11> the part 4 rotates about shaft 5 relative to part 1 and the platform 22 is displaced to enable the pieces of potato to be discharged. In other embodiments the cutting elements are mounted in the fixed member 1 and the movable member 4 may be swung away from the fixed member to provide access to space 8. A means for dividing potatoes into cylindrical sticks of diameter corresponding to the diameter of cavity 8 comprises a punch made up of cutting blades which cross one another and determine circular openings. The punch may be moved in a vertical direction through the potato which is supported on a seat. |
