[Also in Division A5] Novel phosphorus-containing esters of α- (4 - hydroxyphenylmercapto)- benzyl cyanide having the general Formula (1) in which R 1 is a C 1-4 alkyl or alkoxy radical or a phenyl radical, R 2 is a C 1-4 alkyl radical and X is an oxygen or sulphur atom, are prepared by reacting a halide of the general formula in which Hal is a halogen atom, with α-(4- hydroxyphenylmercapto) - benzyl cyanide in the form of a salt or in the presence of an acidbinding agent. The reaction is preferably carried out in a solvent and at a temperature of from 20‹ to 70‹ C. The compounds have pesticidal properties. The starting material α- (4-hydroxyphenylmercapto) - benzyl cyanide is prepared by reacting α-bromobenzyl cyanide with thiohydroquinone in the presence of an acid acceptor.
