In the manual operation for portable, yarnsplicing apparatus, an electrically heated iron 19 is raised, under the control of an adjustable thermostat 23 to the temperature appropriate to the yarn material e.g. nylon monofilament, and the two sections of yarn to be joined are placed in a slot 41 of an anvil 40 beneath which the yarn ends hang or are lightly grasped. Initial depression of a thumb element 36 retracts a carriage bar 32, a slide 29 and anvil 40 but a spring 50 urging a clamp slide 45 forwardly causes a dog 44 to clamp the yarn ends Y in the slot 41 against a shoulder 43. Further depression of element 36 continues the retraction of anvil 40 and dog 44 in unison towards the iron and finally the lower face of anvil 40 slides across the square corner 53 of the sealing plate 24 of the iron which constitutes a stationary anvil and its forward portion is so shaped as to make mating, sliding engagement with a tapered V-shaped groove 42 in the underside of anvil 40, the contact pressure between the anvils being maintained by a spring 38: during this action, dependent waste ends of yarn are melted and severed from the portions clamped in slot 41 and groove 42. The entire carriage bar 32 is reciprocated several times by means of the thumboperated crank 34 and while the clamped ends are riding over the anvil 53, Fig. 6, so as to permanently fuse and weld the ends under heat and pressure and effect a clean splice. The crank is released abruptly by the operator to restore the mechanism to its initial position and release the yarn, spliced by a joint resembling a butt-joint Fig. 12 (not shown). |
