The present disclosure is directed to a mechanical pencil having an internally threaded barrel, a slotted tube for containing a writing lead, means to cause relative rotation between the tube and the barrel, a lead propelling means, a clutch member for normally maintaining the writing lead in engagement with the propelling means, and means to prevent breakage of small diameter leads.
