1361193 Polystyrene/petroleum jelly/thermoplastic elastomer compositions SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJNV 20 Dec 1971 [22 Dec 1970] 60872/70 Heading C3P A toughened vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon polymer composition comprises an untoughened polymer composition which has been prepared by forming a dispersion of petroleum jelly in a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon polymer, blended with a thermoplastic elastomer. The untoughened component is preferably prepared by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of the jelly. The thermoplastic elastomer is preferably a block copolymer such as a styrenebutadiene or styrene-butadiene-styrene block polymer and is preferably present in an amount from 5-40% by weight of the total composition. The petroleum jelly may be partially replaced by mineral oil, (e.g. a mixture of microcrystalline wax and 2-10% by weight of mineral oil. In the examples, styrene is polymerized in the presence of petroleum jelly using aqueous suspension polymerization, and then blended with a styrene-butadien-styrene block polymer thermoplastic elastomer. The products are injection mouldable. |
