1372035 Bleaching textiles PROCTER & GAMBLE Ltd 8 May 1972 [12 May 1971 11 Nov 1971] 14513/71 and 52398/71 Heading D1P [Also in Division B5] A process for removing stains from textiles comprises applying an aqueous solution of an organic detergent, an alkaline, detergency builder salt and a photoactivator selected from rosin, rose bengal, fluorescein, chlorophyll, metal-free porphyrin, sulphonated phthalocyanine and sulphonated zinc phthalocyanine, in the presence of atmospheric oxygen, the textiles being irradiated with visible light including wavelengths 640nm to 690nm. The builder salt may be sodium polyphosphate, sodium citrate, sodium carbonate or sodium silicate. The solution preferably contains as detergent 200-700 mg/litre of sodium linear alkyl (C12) benzene sulphonate, sodium or potassium decyl sulphonate, dodecyl betaine, dimethyl octadecyl amine oxide or tridecanomide and may contain sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as soil suspending agent and an optical brightener. The textiles may be stood or stirred in a solution including 1-50 mg/litre of photoactivator at 50‹F to 180‹F for 15 minutes to 5 hours whilst irradiated with 1000 to 40,000 lumens of light from sunlight or a tungsten lamp. The preferred photoactivator, sulphonated zinc phthalocyanine free from unsulphonated zinc phthalocyanine is prepared by briskly stirring 30ml oleum and 10g zinc phthalocyanine for 3hrs at 110-120‹C cooling and neutralising with sodium hydroxide. |
