PURPOSE:To select a character program while viewing an index character by previously registering and displaying the index character indicating the contents of the character program as well as a magazine number, a program number and a page number in a memory circuit. CONSTITUTION:The memory circuit 3 in which the combination of the magazine number, the program number and the page number outputted from a key input device 2 operated by a viewer and the index character indicating the contents of the character program is registered correspondingly to an item number is provided. A selecting and instructing means for selecting and instructing to output the character program at the time of receiving the character program corresponding to the magazine number, the program number and the page number stored in the memory circuit 3 by displaying, selecting and instructing the item number is provided to display the index character as well as the item number at the time of displaying and selecting and instructing the item number. Thereby, the teletext program is selected while viewing the index character to attain the selection without preparing the corresponding table of the contents of the character program and the item number.
